He said “all I needed was 8 chords, and I could play whatever I wanted” …which I took to heart.

My guitar story likely starts a lot like yours.

I loved music as a kid. It was in the movies, on the radio, and in the video games I was playing.

One day coming home from 8th grade, after hearing Boulevard of Broken Dreams on the school bus radio for the thousandth time (it came out that year, and I SWEAR it’s all they’d play), I went into the garage, grabbed my dads old guitar hanging on the wall collecting dust, and asked him if he’d teach me how to play something.

He said all I needed was 8 chords, and I could play whatever I wanted …which I took to heart.

So I spent HOURS over the next four weeks drilling those 8 chords, thinking I was about to unlock a magic trick. 

Then I asked him how to play something that didn’t involve those 8 chords and he said:

“I don’t know, I’m just a singer”

Realizing I’d have to do it myself, I took to the internet and started bouncing around to different riffs, tried playing whatever song was stuck in my head that day, and somewhere along the way, started doing exercises because “that’s what you’re supposed to do”

I had ZERO direction, but I started to get somewhere.

I loved it, and it brought so much joy into my life, that I wanted to share that with others, so I thought “I’ll go teach guitar”

But fortunately, I realized that’d be silly at that point, because I’d never taken a lesson.

So I heard about this thing called “Classical Guitar” at the “Conservatory” and figured I’d go take some lessons, learn a new thing, and see guitar through a new lens for a little bit.

…but I was hooked.

I was absolutely mesmerized by the idea of someone playing something that sounded like 3 guitars at once, but I could see with my own eyes that it was literally a single acoustic guitar

I thought to myself “I HAVE to learn how to do that”

And not only did I figure out how to get there, but for my entire teaching career (14 years and counting), it’s been my life’s mission to make getting to that point of playing fingerstyle guitar well be a path of joy, without all the formalities, and with as little effort and sacrifice as possible.

I’ve taken a collection of paths for learning fingerstyle guitar, some dating back to the invention of the instrument, and taken the best pieces from each one, to construct the fastest path forward for you.

There’s quite a few things you can skip that you’d be forced to do in a conservatory that will get you the result way faster, but there’s some things you really cannot skip, and rather than sending you to YouTube to try and figure out which is which, I’ve created a clean, point A to point B path just for you, and this is what you’re getting on this page

What Happens Inside Fingerstyle Fast Track

The Five Level Roadmap

Troy will guide you through a five level roadmap, where you’ll learn 25 pieces of guitar music, curated in a specific order to highlight techniques that many guitar players miss when learning. By learning them the right way the first time, you’ll be able to make progress faster than you think it’s possible

In the tests I’ve done of this curriculum with students, the slowest student in the program learned this material 3 times faster than they would have taking lessons through a regular music studio or conservatory.

In addition to the 25 pieces…

You’ll learn technique and theory, but not in the way that you might think. 

Part of why Troy’s method is so effective is because you’ll learn how to do techniques within songs first. And if it’s needed, you’ll learn how to use a specific drill to quickly tackle the problem area in the technique, and get back to playing music.

With theory, you’ll learn the minimum information required to play the theory concept on your guitar, and be playing real music with it. That way, instead of being an abstract concept, it’s something you can see, hear, and play.

At the end of each lesson, you get personalized feedback

You’ll be able to submit audio or video of how you’re doing with the assignment, and receive personalized support within 48 hours confirming you’re on the right rack, or showing you what to fix along the way.

There will also be group coaching calls held twice a month at different times where you can ask any and all questions you have about fingerpicking guitar, and have them answered live by Troy. (If you can’t make the live call, replays will be available within 24 hours).

And after graduation…
