He said âall I needed was 8 chords, and I could play whatever I wantedâ âŚwhich I took to heart.
My guitar story likely starts a lot like yours.
I loved music as a kid. It was in the movies, on the radio, and in the video games I was playing.
One day coming home from 8th grade, after hearing Boulevard of Broken Dreams on the school bus radio for the thousandth time (it came out that year, and I SWEAR itâs all theyâd play), I went into the garage, grabbed my dads old guitar hanging on the wall collecting dust, and asked him if heâd teach me how to play something.
He said all I needed was 8 chords, and I could play whatever I wanted âŚwhich I took to heart.
So I spent HOURS over the next four weeks drilling those 8 chords, thinking I was about to unlock a magic trick.Â
Then I asked him how to play something that didnât involve those 8 chords and he said:
âI donât know, Iâm just a singerâ
đ¤Ś
Realizing Iâd have to do it myself, I took to the internet and started bouncing around to different riffs, tried playing whatever song was stuck in my head that day, and somewhere along the way, started doing exercises because âthatâs what youâre supposed to doâ
I had ZERO direction, but I started to get somewhere.
I loved it, and it brought so much joy into my life, that I wanted to share that with others, so I thought âIâll go teach guitarâ
But fortunately, I realized thatâd be silly at that point, because Iâd never taken a lesson.
So I heard about this thing called âClassical Guitarâ at the âConservatoryâ and figured Iâd go take some lessons, learn a new thing, and see guitar through a new lens for a little bit.
âŚbut I was hooked.
I was absolutely mesmerized by the idea of someone playing something that sounded like 3 guitars at once, but I could see with my own eyes that it was literally a single acoustic guitar
I thought to myself âI HAVE to learn how to do thatâ
And not only did I figure out how to get there, but for my entire teaching career (14 years and counting), itâs been my lifeâs mission to make getting to that point of playing fingerstyle guitar well be a path of joy, without all the formalities, and with as little effort and sacrifice as possible.
Iâve taken a collection of paths for learning fingerstyle guitar, some dating back to the invention of the instrument, and taken the best pieces from each one, to construct the fastest path forward for you.
Thereâs quite a few things you can skip that youâd be forced to do in a conservatory that will get you the result way faster, but thereâs some things you really cannot skip, and rather than sending you to YouTube to try and figure out which is which, Iâve created a clean, point A to point B path just for you, and this is what youâre getting on this page
What Happens Inside Fingerstyle Fast Track
The Five Level Roadmap
Troy will guide you through a five level roadmap, where youâll learn 25 pieces of guitar music, curated in a specific order to highlight techniques that many guitar players miss when learning. By learning them the right way the first time, youâll be able to make progress faster than you think itâs possible
In the tests Iâve done of this curriculum with students, the slowest student in the program learned this material 3 times faster than they would have taking lessons through a regular music studio or conservatory.
In addition to the 25 piecesâŚ
Youâll learn technique and theory, but not in the way that you might think.Â
Part of why Troyâs method is so effective is because youâll learn how to do techniques within songs first. And if itâs needed, youâll learn how to use a specific drill to quickly tackle the problem area in the technique, and get back to playing music.
With theory, youâll learn the minimum information required to play the theory concept on your guitar, and be playing real music with it. That way, instead of being an abstract concept, itâs something you can see, hear, and play.
At the end of each lesson, you get personalized feedback
Youâll be able to submit audio or video of how youâre doing with the assignment, and receive personalized support within 48 hours confirming youâre on the right rack, or showing you what to fix along the way.
There will also be group coaching calls held twice a month at different times where you can ask any and all questions you have about fingerpicking guitar, and have them answered live by Troy. (If you canât make the live call, replays will be available within 24 hours).
And after graduationâŚ
Along with receiving a certificate for completing the program, youâll be able to take the your new abilities as an intermediate fingerpicking guitarist in any (or all) of these directions:
- Study intermediate classical guitar (starting at RCM level 5 or equivalent).
- Dive deeper into flamenco guitar, percussive acoustic, bossa nova, or other niche styles.
- Learn beautiful arrangements of popular songs, or film scores like what you hear on social media.
- Write and play your own songs for yourself, or with your friends.
- Share the music youâre proud of with friends and family with confidence.Â

Meet JeffâŚ
Jeff and his son started learning guitar with Troy at around the same time.. Jeffâs more into classical and his sonâs more into popular artists like Noah Kahan and Zach Bryan. After going through the fingerstyle fast track curriculum, Jeffâs able to attempt and play intermediate classical guitar music, popular songs from movies, and jazzy fingerpicking pieces with ease.
âI cannot say enough about what an excellent teacher Troy is! Engaged, patient and extremely skilled at helping me improve. The online format is ideal for fitting into our busy week and means that I have been able to fit my lessons in even when out of town for work.â

Meet DanicaâŚ
Danica picked up guitar years ago, with the goal of being able to accompany herself while singing. It started out with strumming a couple chords, but after learning guitar with Troy, she was able to add different fingerpicking patterns to her guitar playing while singing.
âTroyâs an excellent teacher, is super nice and an all around enjoyable person. Iâm a slow learner, impatient, and I yell at myself and my guitar A LOT in front of him and he makes it easy to recover and keep pushing forward. Heâs also helped me overcome most of my shyness which really holds me back.â
